Ladder 1 and Car 5 (DC Glore) were dispatched to assist the West Reading Fire Department at the scene of a vehicle fire inside the Tower Health/Reading Hospital 5th Avenue parking deck. Upon responding, both city units were redirected along with Kenhorst Engine 69 to cover a fire alarm activation at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on South 7th Avenue in West Reading. Ladder 1 and Car 5 arrived via the South 7th Avenue entrance. With nothing showing from that portion of the large complex, Engine 69 proceeded around the building to the Park Road entrance. As city units began to notice a haze developing in the exterior lighting along the building, Engine 69 reported smoke showing from their vantage point and declared a working fire.
Investigating further, Car 5 noted fire showing from several windows along the Parkside Drive North side of the complex. West Reading units then requested a 2nd alarm assignment, which also brought City Engine 3 to the scene. Ladder 1 placed the aerial ladder to the roof. As L1's tillerman forced entry and guided the Engine 64 nozzleman to the fire area, L1's driver and Car 5 ascended to the roof. The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked-down. There was no extension to the roofline of the building. The fire was placed under control by West Reading Command at 01:55 hrs; however, extensive ventilation efforts were necessary due to the size of the building. The fire is under investigation.
Car 3 (DC Banks) returned to the city to provide coverage.
