Congratulations to Firefighter Merlin Planer on his retirement after more than 24 years of service to the City of Reading. Merlin began his career on August 10th of 1992. After completing fire training FF Planer was assigned to the B platoon as a jumper.

Paramedic/Firefighter Kirk Litzenberger promoted to Fire Prevention Lieutenant per personnel directive 2017-01Kirk was hired by the department on July 8th of 2007 to fill a vacant EMS position. He was assigned to Medic 2 on the D platoon.

Congratulations to Lieutenant Gail Knauer on her new position with the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences. Lieutenant Knauer resigned after 16 years of service to the City of Reading. Gail was hired on January 1st of 2001 when the fire department retook control of EMS.

The Reading Firefighters completed their 2016 8th Annual Toy Drive on Friday morning at Trooper Thorns Irish Pub. The firefighters raised more that $4,500 through a t-shirt campaign and donations from area businesses and clubs.

On Friday November 18th, several firefighters attended the Greater Lehigh Valley MDA Black & Blue Ball. One of the nights events was a live auction in which the Fire Department raffles off a children's dream birthday party to be held at a Reading Fire House.

Reading recruit William Farmer graduated from the Allentown Fire Academy on Friday November 4th. Farmer was hired with the 2016 class but was unable to start the academy with his class due to military commitments.

The Reading Fire Department has ordered a 100' tractor drawn ladder truck to replace Ladder 1. The current Ladder is a 19 year old Simon-Duplex/LTI which has seen hard service and developed several mechanical issues.

The week of October 9th is National Fire Prevention Week. The RFD Fire Prevention Office has numerous fire safety activities planned for the month. Firefighters will be meeting with children, elderly citizens, and the general public to promote fire safety.

On Saturday October 8th the Reading Fire Department held it's annual Medal Day to honor the performance of several firefighters. The event was held at the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences.

The Reading Firefighters completed their 2016 Muscular Dystrophy fundraising campaign after holding their fall boot drive at 11th & Rockland Streets. The total from the boot drive came to $5,513 which brought our annual total to $10,547! We are proud to help raise money for such a great charity....

The Reading Firefighters have returned from Maryland after participating in the 43rd annual MDA Softball Tournament in Prince Georges County Maryland. The group raised $720 through their "wings around the ring" event on Thursday night after grilling 100 lbs of chicken wings.

The Reading Fire Department conducted their annual memorial service to commemorate the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The ceremony was held on a beautiful day at City Park Fireman's Band Shell. The service began at 0839 to coincide with the collapse of the first tower.

Our condolences to the family of retired Firefighter Walter "Kelly" Kalinowski. Kelly's started his career in January of 1963 and retired from Ladder 2 on the C platoon in March of 1988. We have no information on services.

Congratulations to 1st Deputy Sean Hart on his new position with Berks County DES. Chief Hart resigned after 19 years of service to the City of Reading. The Chief was hired on June 16th of 1997. After the academy Firefighter Hart was assigned to the "B" platoon as a jumper firefighter.

On Friday evening the academy graduated 8 probationary firefighters during a ceremony held at the Double Tree Hotel. The ceremony began with entry by the RFD Color Guard marching to bagpipe music played by Mark Atkinson.

We express our condolences on the passing of Retired Firefighter Edward P. Ott. Ed passed away in his Lewes Deleware home on Saturday August 13th. Firefighter Ott was hired on January 30th 1970 and retired on June 18th of 1993 from Engine 11.
