Children's Day At Community College

On Saturday May 2, 2009, Reading Area Community College held its annual event to celebrate children. The City of Reading Department of Fire and Rescue Services participated by setting up, and presenting fire safety materials and providing the opportunity for the children to see and sit in a fire truck. More than 100 children stopped by to see the fire truck and received handouts for fire safety.
Reading Phillies Mascot Change-Up, as well as 2 young ladies Jamie, and Allyson from the R-Phils Dance Team were also at the event and stopped by to see the firefighters and the firetruck.

The 7th annual Black & Blue Ball was held once again at Classic Harley-Davidson along Route 183 in Bern Township. This years event featured a silent & live auction, along with dinner, dancing, & and of course drinks for all.

Reading Firefighters began touring the new Reading Eagle press building located behind the Engine 3 & Ladder 1's quarters. Fire Marshal Todd Iager took both training groups through the building explaining the operations of the new $18 million 4 story printing press.

Firefighter Merlin Planer is operating our "Hazard House" fire prevention program. The small scale house is constructed with several working fire hazards for school age children to identify to teach them about fire safety.

During a recent vacation to visit friends in Charleston/SC, I had the oppurtunity to view the site of Sofa Super Store fire which tragically ended the lives of 9 firefighters in June of 2007. I apollogize for the condition of the photos, but it was raining off and on throughout the day.

Multiple public safety departments were on hand for a mock bus disaster drill sponsored by the BCIU. The goal of the drill was to show their drivers what would happen if a bus would be involved in an accident with students on board.
