Congratulations to Lieutenant Thomas Rehr on his promotion to Second Deputy Chief
Chief Rehr was hired on July 6th of 1992. After completing fire training Rehr was assigned to the "C" platoon as a jumper firefighter. In August of 1994 the city ended single driver companies and placed a second firefighter onboard. This transition would have FF Rehr assigned to Engine 3 on the "B" platoon. 8 years later Rehr was promoted to Lieutenant on Rescue 1 on August 3rd of 2002. Lieutenant Rehr remained with Rescue 1 for 15 years prior to taking the promotion to Deputy Chief. Chief Rehr is assigned to the "A" platoon as Car 9.

For the past 3 months the Reading Fire Department has been conducting training on the care of victims during a hostile or terroristic event. All platoons were trained by Deputy Chief Thomas Kemery in use of rapid life-saving skills when dealing with a hostile situation.

The Reading Fire Department held its annual awards ceremony on Saturday October 7th at the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences. Citations are submitted throughout the year by department officers.

The fire department will soon be taking delivery of a 2017 Seagrave tractor-drawn ladder truck. The new ladder truck will be replacing a unit built in the late 1990's. Ladder 1 is stationed at 3rd and Court Streets.

On Friday evening September 15th the 2017 Reading Fire Recruit Class graduated during a ceremony held at the Double Tree Hotel. After a short presentation by the Officers the recruits were given their badges to be pinned by a family member.

Reading Firefighters and other honored guests gathered in City Park today to honor the events of 9/11. The ceremony was conducted with pauses at 9:59 and 10:28 to signify the falling of both towers of the World Trade Center.

Once again several Reading Firefighters traveled to Prince George's County Maryland to attend the 44th annual IAFF/MDA Softball Tournament. The 3-day tournament features teams from Fire Departments all across the county.

It is with regret that long time secretary Michele Kline has resigned for a position in the Police Department. Michele has been a staple in the Chief's Office since 1997 when she began working for the department under Fire Chief William Rehr.

On August 18th the Greater Lehigh Valley Muscular Dystrophy office conducted their 2017 Berks Lockup. Keith Lerch, son of Reading Firefighter Scott Lerch volunteered to participate. Within a few hours Keith raised more than $920 for MDA.

Congratulations to 1st Deputy Fire Chief Kent Born on his retirement after 25 years of service. Kent was hired in July of 1992. After training, he was assigned as a jumper firefighter on the "C" platoon.

Congratulations to Firefighter Quentin Englehart on nearly 25 years of service to the City of Reading. Quentin retired on May 21st however he was unable to finish his interview until now. Firefighter Englehart began his career on July 6th of 1992.
